Example: Subject Search

Let's say you're looking for mathematical information about triangles. Here's how to find some good websites on this topic by using a Subject Search:

  1. From the Elementary, Middle, or High School home page (see Top Navigation), click Mathematics to see a list of math topics.

  2. On the new page, drill down by clicking Geometry to see a list of geometry topics.

  3. On the new page, continue to drill down by clicking Plane Figures to see a list of two-dimensional figure topics.

  4. On the new page, continue to drill down by clicking Polygons to see a list of specific types of polygons.

  5. On the new page, continue to drill down by clicking Triangles to see a list of specific types of triangles.

      A new page is displayed. This page allows for many options with regard to mathmatical information about "polygons."

      • You can continue to drill down into a more specific subtopic such as Parts of a Triangle or the Pythagorean Theorem.
      • You can click on a website under the bar titled "Sites", or click More to go to a search result on "polygons.

  6. Let's say we want to find out specifically about the pythagorean theorem. Click Pythagorean Theorem to see more information about this subtopic.

      A Search Results page is displayed. This page highlights websites specifically about the Pythagorean theorem.

      A list of the subject categories you selected to get to this point, called a "taxonomy string," is displayed at the top of the page:

      If desired, you can click one of these links to jump back to a broader category.

  7. On the new page, scroll down to click Ask Dr. Math FAQs: Pythagorean Theorem to go to that site on the Web. The site opens in a different window so that you can keep the netTrekker Search Results page available.

  8. If your Subject Search resulted in more than one page of search results, use the page number links or "next >" and "< previous" links at the bottom of the Search Results page to move from page to page.
